Breaded Mozzarella In A Creamy Tomato Sauce

When I eat out, Mozzarella in Breadcrumbs is one of my favourite starters. There is a particular Italian restaurant I have been going to for years, purely on the strength of the amazing tomato sauce they serve it up with.

Enjoying a meal out can be somewhat of a rarity and if I do happen to find myself in a restaurant, it’s usually with the boys. Unfortunately, Bam Bam and Nugget seem to set a timer as soon as we walk in and sit down. If a meal isn’t eaten before the time is up. You can say farewell to the two little angels sitting nicely at the table and hello to their much naughtier counterparts!

These days, eating at home is, by far, much more of a relaxing experience. I decided to attempt a replica of the delicious starter I have enjoyed for years and although this doesn’t taste completely the same, I have created something equally as delicious that I can enjoy until the day restaurant visits are normal again and no longer rushed.

Make Your Own Breaded Mozzarella Recipe

Coat each piece of mozzarella in the egg and then into the breadcrumbs.

Repeat this step again so you have a double layer of breadcrumb coating. Make sure each side is well covered with the breadcrumbs. Leave to one side.

Chop the onion and crush the garlic.

Melt the butter in a pan over a medium heat and add the onion and garlic, cook until soft.

Add the tomatoes, herbs, sugar and season with salt and pepper. Heat over a medium heat for a few minutes.

Remove from the heat and place into a food processor. Mix briefly so it breaks up any big lumps but doesn’t make it completely smooth.

Place back in the pan and add the cream. Mix and heat through.

Once you have prepared your sauce, heat a some oil in a pan and cook each piece of mozzarella on both sides until it has turned golden brown.

Pour the sauce over your cooked cheese and serve immediately.
